Founded in 1660, the Royal Society's purpose is to promote and advance the understanding of science, technology and engineering worldwide. Many eminent scientists have been elected as Fellows of the Society including Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin, Ernest Rutherford, Albert Einstein, Dorothy Hodgkin and Stephen Hawking.
The Society is based in Carlton House Terrace overlooking The Mall and St James's Park. Our central London conference facilities are easily accessible by public transport. Designed by John Nash in 1827, this Grade 1 listed building has recently undergone a major refurbishment programme to provide first class meeting and dining facilities, with state of the art audio-visual services. Facilities for the disabled are available.

The Royal Society is located in Carlton House Terrace, just off Waterloo Place, between Pall Mall and The Mall. It is less than five minutes' walk to Piccadilly Circus Underground Station and ten minutes to Charing Cross Mainline and Underground Stations, or 20 minutes through St James's Park to Victoria. Trafalgar Square and all bus services through it are also in close proximity.
